…and Israel listened (Day 7)

I didn’t read yesterday.

A million excuses could be given but the reality is that I didn’t make it a priority…until 2am when I couldn’t sleep {funny how that happens!!}.

20140508-153623.jpg

And as I began 1 Samuel 7, I was hit hard by Samuel’s words to Israel:

Come back!!…but come back ALL the way. Destroy the past and look Grace straight in the eye and He *will* defend and protect you!

…and Israel listened.

…and God defeated the enemy:

As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to attack Israel. But the Lord thundered with a mighty sound that day against the Philistines and threw them into confusion and they were routed before Israel.
{1 Samuel 7.10}

Lessons I wish I had read in the daylight flooded my heart in the cover of nighttime…

if I don’t praise Him, the rocks will (Day 6)

20140506-120343.jpg

1 Samuel 6

The Philistines are trying to figure out what to do with the Ark that they stole from Israel.

It has done nothing but make them miserable with death, tumors and intense fear…and so they seek guidance and wisdom from their “religious” people. (Something Israel failed to do…ahem) After a long discussion, they decide to send it back, along with golden guilt offerings, to “give glory to the God of Israel”…and the Ark gets back into the land of Israel.

My biggest take away from this is STILL that the *enemy* showed more wisdom, honor, respect and fear for the God of Israel than His own people did…and than I often do.

When I find myself in situations and whirlwinds that can seem like I am “cursed”, as the Philistines were, the wise move is to stop and evaluate, as the Philistines did.

Am I out of line anywhere on my walk with God?

Do I have I unconfessed or intentional areas of sin?

Has He asked me to act and I am choosing to hide instead?

This may not always be the case, BUT it just may be the case…so the first place that we should always run to is God. Dive into prayer and into His Word…even drawing a trusted friend into your confidence, if need be, to help encourage you. If it is something between you and God, He is always willing and faithful to show you…and to guide you back to where you need to be.

For me, today…this lesson hits home. On many levels…one of which is this blog. I have run from it for so long despite His call to return to writing. It took a wise friend’s words to prompt me to just “knock off the cobwebs” and get to posting. 🙂

It is *so* easy to forget that the God that I say I serve is ALIVE…He is REAL…and if I don’t speak of Him with the honor and respect He deserves, “the very stones will cry out!” {Luke 19.40}

idols bow down (Day 5)

20140506-115855.jpg

1 Samuel, Chapter 5

It comes with a heavy reminder that the holiness of God will not be placed alongside idols {vs 1-5} or mistreated by the hearts of people {vs 6-12} without consequences.

I do find it quite ironic that His own people had NO fear or respect for His Spirit {as shown in 1 Samuel 4} and yet the pagan nations were terrified of Him {5.11} and their own god was dropped into a position of worship and destroyed in His presence {5.3&4}.

Only God is worthy of our worship and, given the chance, He will destroy those things that we worship instead of Him.

good luck charms (Day 4)

Today’s reading is 1 Samuel 4…

20140506-115203.jpg

Israel had just been defeated in battle (vs2) and instead of praying, crying out to their God and seeking His direction, they sent for the Ark (vs3-4).

I got stuck there for awhile.

And now I am confronted with the sad fact that, so often, we can treat the objects of our faith (Israel used the Ark…I can use my Bible or a well-used prayer journal) as “good luck charms” instead of choosing an active relationship with the *Creator* of those objects.

We miss the point…and we lose the battle, just as Israel did. (vs10-11)

Either idol worship or relationship with God…we have to choose wisely because we are always doing one or the other.

the choice is mine (Day 3)

I tend to struggle with getting my reading time in on the weekends…but I am thankful for the accountability of the community of the 31 Day Challenge ☺️

1 Samuel 3 shows the simple reality of a relationship with God ~

He calls {vs 4-10},

we answer {vs 10}

and He then reveals Himself thru His Word {vs 21}.

Blows me away that He does *all* the work…I am simply responsible for whether or not I accept Him.

the weight of excuses (Day 2)

This blows my mind.

20140506-113949.jpg
Somehow, even while surrounded by bad examples of what being “holy” means, a young boy not *only * draws close to God, but he walks in the footsteps of a Priest not yet known to him…

“And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.” {luke 2.52}

Funny how many excuses I can use to not be the person He calls me to be ~ but in the light of Samuel’s genuine heart, I find those excuses to be weights ~ heavy, useless weights that I need to let go of.

to believe like hannah (Day 1)

Hello!

I have joined with Kristin Schmucker and her online #lampandlight community for a 31 Day Scripture Challenge. What is it?? Pick a book of the Bible that you would like to read…and each day in the month of May, you read & study one chapter of that book. Then you take a photo, post it to FB or IG with “#lampandlight”… and you are in!!

{and if you want to follow me on IG, I am @bina526}

A friend of mine suggested that I post my thoughts here…and so…here I am.

Day 1.

20140506-114414.jpg
I honestly chose 1 Samuel as my 31 Day Scripture Challenge book because it had 31 chapters in it (sad…but this is no lie). I think God (being God) chose 1 Samuel because He *knew* I needed to see the raw faith of a woman who was truly *desperate* for God’s help.

Hannah prayed so fervently that she appeared drunk…and then was simply told “go in peace and the God of Israel grant your petition”…and she BELIEVED it. Fully. 100%. No doubt at all.

I am humbled by her example…and deeply motivated to re-evaluate my heart before The Lord.

What a way to start this 31 days with #lampandlight!!
