what they want but not what they need (Day 9)

1 Samuel, chapter 9 introduces us to Saul. This is a man who, on the outside, seems to be everything a “king” should be:

~ the most handsome man in all of Israel

~ the tallest one around

~ heir to a fortune

…and yet, as I read this description in verses 1 & 2, I can’t help but think of a moment still to come: Samuel is standing before the sons of Jesse, looking for the new king, when God says, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature…for the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.
(1 Samuel 16.7)

When Israel demanded that they have a king in chapter 8, they said they wanted this leader so they could be like other nations. (1 Samuel 8.5,19-20) Having no concern for God’s opinion of them, they now seek to be like everyone else…and based on that, Saul will be every bit of the leader Israel wants. The sad part of this is that Saul will not show even a hint of what Israel really needs…and they don’t care.

It would be easy to sit back and shake my head at how “dumb” they are, but am I any different? I can think of a million times when I have chosen what looked/felt good over what I know is best for me. It just goes to show that no matter how “advanced” society becomes, “people” stay the same

(What is this all about?? check out the explanation on Day 1)

Looking up, as always…
